On finding the perfect embellishment

 

 

 

As a clean & simple scrapper, I have some 'issues' about adding a lot of stuff to my layouts. ;)  I wish I could, but it just doesn't work for me. I'm pretty content to make a page that focuses on my journaling and photo(s), and adding one or 2 embellishments that mesh well with the theme of my layout.  I went looking through my Ormolu stash, searching for something to go with this layout, and to my great joy, I found this 'Legendary' fabric tag from the 'Fact or Fiction' line that I'd totally forgotten about. Seriously?!  It's perfect.  I remember loving it when I first saw it, but thinking it would have to be something pretty specific for me to be able to use it. I think this photo of my son photographing the Empire State building ( which is iconic and legendary, right?)  works perfectly.  I layered the tag on top of the map strip, glued on a camera image that I hand cut from a piece of patterned paper, and then sewed it on.  Instant title, and my layout was done.  Love when that happens! I'd love to hear your thoughts on embellishing your layouts... do you embellish a lot, a little, or not at all?

I had Kaitlin make up some custom flair buttons for me, each one with the initial of everyone in my family. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, then I had the idea to jot (type!) some of the things we are all currently doing or are into.

I ran some of the blank package tags through my typewriter to add the journaling, and added some twine to 2 of the tags.

I love the touch the custom flair buttons add to the tags!!! I think I will definitely be ordering some more;)

Saying Happy Birthday

My sweetie is turning 31 tomorrow, so I thought I'd put together a birthday card for him. 31 is one of those odd birthdays that no one really makes a big deal out of, but I feel that every birthday is a reason for crafting ;)

I started with a kraft base, a few old supplies (how about that Love, Elsie line?!?!), Ormolu 2-Day Hooray Number Flair Buttons and Fact or Fiction Dots n' Spots.

I added a scrap piece of scalloped paper, whose origin I can't seem to remember, a few pieces of chipboard, a realllly old American Crafts "Celebrate" rub on, and stitched it all together, rounded the corners and viola --- done until next year!

Here's hoping he'll like his card, the key lime pie he requested and the presents I got him. If nothing else, I got to use up some of my very, very old supplies (and some great Ormolu ones, too!)

Good morning!! Today I am going to share with you a card that I made, using Ormolu tags as my sentiment.

Here it is:

For this one, I trimmed the top off of one of the Fact or Fiction Negative tags, then layered a fabric swatch over that. I then layered the tag over that and added the xx and oo on either side of the ampersand cut out.

I like to think outside of the box when I am making cards and make cards with unique sentiments (which can be  a problem because I never have any birthday cards to giveaway, ha!), and going through the Ormolu tags made that an easy task;)

Neglected Subjects

Who is the most neglected person in your scrapbooks (besides yourself)? For me, it is my husband. With four kids and a grandbaby to photograph, I don't create many layouts with him in them. This is another photo I took during our trip to Steamboat last July. This is a rare moment where he looks relaxed so I really wanted to capture this. I took the GO Ticket Book cover and decorated the front so I could use it for hidden journaling. I also layered two of the Dots & Spots for a little texture.

So, next time you are snapping pictures of your kids, pets, grandchildren, etc., sneak a picture of your significant other and use it on a layout. He will be touched that you did.

Our 20 Year Love Story

Yesterday, my husband and I celebrated 20 years of knowing each other. Yup. Twenty years. :) To commemorate the occasion (in addition to surprising him with a lovely dinner out, without kids), I ordered a canvas print of a black and white picture of the two of us, found a cute little wooden sign that says "Love is all you need" and made this card:

To make it, I took five 3x3" squares of kraft cardstock. On two of them, I added tiny pictures representing the passage of time (pics of the two of us over the past 20 years)...on the other three, I created the title "our 20 year love story." I attached them all to a thick ribbon (with extra sticky double sided tape) so they accordion-ed like a little card...like so:

Because the canvas print and wooden sign were rather monochromatic, I stuck with that scheme in making the card, mixing and matching lovely Ormolu products (right down to the letters punched out of the negative package tags):

Tag You're It

 

 

I have to admit that there is no rhyme or reason to how I approached my layout for today, but it's one of my favorites of late!  This seems to be the norm for me when I sit down to create something using Ormolu products because quite honestly they have to be some of the easiest for me to use.  Then I end up looking at it to find a "theme" or technique, which you've probably figured out by now is not a strong suit of mine! No worries of me inventing the "next big thing" in scrapbooking!

For this one though I stood back and noticed I focused on tags - both package/office shaped tags and circle/dots n spots tags.   I had a 1, 2 and 3 Negative Number tags and since I knew I wanted to go in the direction of a Halloween themed layout I went with the 3 and 1 as a focus.

I layered some paper behind the numbers then set out to embellish them even further with a trimmed calendar tag (no longer available). 

I was proud of myself for actually using one of the Dots N Spots in it's full form!  I tend to cut these down at first chance, partly because that leaves me with another half, and partly because I love the "peek" of a tag above a title, photo or some paper. 

And because I love to cut them in half, this layout also features some halvsies too!

And I think I say this every time, but I love how so many of Ormolu's lines can be showcased together on one layout.  I believe I used product from 4 different lines, but they definitely coordinate together so well!

Custom Flair

I have to tell you that I have had some custom flair sitting in my Ormolu bin for a while now.  Let's be honest, I've been hoarding it.  I love this flair and should probably get more for my hoarding drawer.  I love the fact that Kaitlin gives the option of not only letters, phrases and images, but also the option of 16 colors too.  So for this layout I busted out the "E" for miss Ella and I'm so glad I broke down and finally used it!

I just love that blue color and it was perfect for these swimming photos with all the blue water and suit!  I simply layered it on top of a Fact or Fiction Dots N Spots, then again on a chipboard ribbon, which again was perfect for the theme of the layout!

I dug into my Fact or Fiction Swatches too and experimented a bit with some rub ons.  They went on like butter I tell you!  I thought there might be some issues with it fully sticking to fabric, but it was not a problem at all!  Love how it turned out in the end!

So I encourage you to dig into those custom flair buttons and use them on your next project!  They are absolutely perfect for layouts and cards too.  If you haven't ordered any you must head on over and grab some up!  They are amazing!

The little things...



Hi everyone! Emily here! Today I have a quick layout to share with you. I have been going through my photos recently and was noticing how too often I  find myself taking photos that are at "just the right moment."  You know...one where my daughter's hair isn't in her eyes, where there aren't toys on the floor, where there's not food all over my son's shirt. These are the photos I tend put in layouts, on my blog, and post on Facebook.  But the thing about these photos is that they while they look good, they aren't really...well, real.  Let's face it...life is not perfect, so why are people (myself included!) so afraid to share reality with the world?

I took a ton of "real" shots last weekend.  They definitely fall into the realm of "keeping it real."  I wanted to feature them on a single layout as a snapshot of a single weekend.  I am not, by nature, a multi-photo scrapper, so this was quite a challenge for me, but I liked how it all turned out! I used my Selphy printer to print four photos per 4x6 sheet and then arranged them into a mismatched grid pattern. Finally, I embellished with some my Ormolu Fact or Fiction favorites!

 

So this week...I challenge you to take some "real" photos. Don't worry about the details...just capture life as it is.  I would love for you to link up some of your photos or any layouts you create with them!  Have a great Monday!
